The Ultimate Guide to Pattern Mixing

Create interest in your space by incorporating a variety of patterns + textures- the right way

The formal living room of #TheBellevueResidence.

Five steps to perfect pattern mixing

  1. Have a neutral base

The secret to foolproof pattern mixing is starting with a neutral base- whether it be white walls or a cream colored sectional. Introduce patterns with throw pillows, an area rug, curtains, and other accessories. Bonus- these items are easy to swap out if your taste changes!

  2. Pick a color palette

Start by choosing your color palette- sticking to one or two complimentary hues, then picking patterns within those tones will ensure a cohesive space. For an extra touch, consider adding a third hue for a fun pop of color.

  3. Play off contrast

Combining various shades within the same color family creates visual interest and can be used to draw the eye to a specific area you want to highlight.

  4. Create visual balance

Offset bold prints or busy patterns with muted fabrics and solids for the perfect combination that isn’t overwhelming.

  5. Trust your gut

Know what doesn’t go- if it seems off, it probably is. Avoid costly mistakes by ordering samples of all fabrics first to see them side by side. This is also where an interior designer comes in handy ;).
