Country On The Coast
This week’s charming home has us feeling as though we have suddenly travelled across the seas…with one foot still in the New England coast and the other on a vast English countryside. The vibrant landscape is so infectious that it instantly gives a feeling of energy and glee. Just by looking at the photos, we can easily imagine how crisp the air must feel when stepping foot on this Westerly property. Located in the beautiful Watch Hill neighborhood, this home was originally built back in 1925. True to that date, it has all the rustic warmth and charming character one would expect from an almost century-old home. But that character doesn’t just come from the structure itself, its mostly from the tastefully chosen style in its interior design. We’ve listed for you the top 5 design elements that we feel made this home stand out with its English Country charm!
1. Courtyard entrance
Upon entering the property, there is this beautiful display of landscape design. It suddenly starts to paint this picture of the bucolic atmosphere you will soon be immersed in once inside. An atmosphere in which a relaxed style of living is dressed in a quaint like fashion. This tranquil courtyard truly is reflective of the home’s interior qualities; where the isolated pockets of both gardens and leisurely settings come together as one beautiful cohesive ambience.
2. Rustic, Clean Contrast
Now let’s head on in and show you how perfectly charming this home really is. Let’s start with the home’s perfect balance between rustic charm and a bright and airy aesthetic. Sometimes when you hear a home described as rustic, country style you think it will be a very warm space with lots of wood and muted palettes that reflect the outdoors, such as subdued greens, yellows and blues. This Watch Hill home however has a bright white color palette and clean, crisp features thus resulting in a light and pleasant atmosphere.
3. Pattern Accents
Because this property has such a clear English Country influence, it’s not surprising that it turned itself from a house into a home. A house is simply a place of residence…a form of shelter. A home, however, has stories…it has history. It’s not just the weathered wood that creates this cozy feeling, though, that’s merely one piece of it. It’s the added layers of textures and patterns that are present in every room you walk into. Before you go thinking that this might make it a bit overwhelming, it doesn’t. To credit our previous note, selectively showcasing certain details from a foundation of crisp white spaces creates a beautiful composition where the rustic and decorative elements offset the negative space. This, to us, defines balance.
4. Touch of color
Sometimes a little goes a long way. In this case, blue and brown paint definitely did. The bedrooms throughout the home cohesively share the same minimalist design. While a white color palette creates the base, bits of color are applied to the trim and doors creating a simple yet very effective pop in each room and adding to the home’s country charm.
5. Subtle Diversity
Lastly, another feature we love about this home are the number of dining spaces it offers and just how different they are from one another. There’s the cozy library nook setting, the “wake up with breakfast and a view” setting and the informal family dining room setting. They all offer such different experiences but still manage to maintain the innate qualities of the home as a whole. Of the three, though, we will say the library nook is our favorite because let’s be honest, you can’t have an English Country style home without stacks and shelves of endless reading material!
